This line was started in 1999 in order to study cross contamination in the manufacture of tablets (FEDER), and it was developed in collaboration with the former GLAXO company (actually GlaxoSmithKline) as a result of a previous relationship related to adequacy of analytical methodologies and in the evaluation of new formulations and packages. New validated methods of cleaning were proposed the use of the double swab, as the most effective alternative. We are currently collaborating with other pharmaceutical companies , in the detection and evaluation of impurities in raw materials and pharmaceutical preparations.
We have also developed with the Institute of Applied Ophthalmology (IOBA ) a joint research activity, which resulted in new compounds and applications for ophthalmic treatments. It can be highlighted that we developed an efficient method of purifying silicone oil for intraocular use , by providing the purer silicone oil that could be found in the market. The entire methodology was transferred to the Company AJL (Álava, Spain) that continues to commercialize this product.
It has been also paid special attention within this research line to chiral compounds, and in particular to investigate the possibility of obtaining individually enantiomers by using semi -preparative supercritical chromatography. Those compounds were assayed against the use of racemic substances in order to decrease the applied amount and the adverse effects caused by the presence of inactive or harmful compounds.
